Historical Overview
Château La Tour Blanche, located along the Bordeaux Wine Route in Graves and Sauternes, has a storied history that dates back to the 18th century. The estate was initially owned by Jean Saint-Marc du Latourblanche, the treasurer-general to Louis XIV. After changing hands several times, the estate was acquired by the German businessman Frederic Focke, who significantly elevated its reputation in the 19th century. In 1907, the estate was bequeathed to the French state by its then-owner Daniel "Osiris" Iffla, with the stipulation that it be used as an agricultural college. This led to the establishment of the La Tour Blanche School of Viticulture and Oenology in 1911, which continues to operate and produce wine to this day.
Viticulture and Winemaking
Château La Tour Blanche spans 65 hectares, primarily planted with Sémillon (83%), Sauvignon Blanc (12%), and Muscadelle (5%). This unique blend allows the estate to produce wines with exceptional balance and complexity. The terroir, characterized by a mix of gravel, clay, and sand, further enhances the aromatic profile of the wines.
The estate's production focuses on their renowned sweet white wine, Château La Tour Blanche, which is known for its richness, sweetness, and fresh acidity. The estate also produces a second wine, Les Charmilles de La Tour Blanche, as well as several other varieties including dry whites and a red wine.
