A Beacon of Tradition and Innovation in Pauillac
Château Pontet-Canet is a historic estate in Pauillac that's not just a guardian of tradition; it is a pioneer in sustainable viticulture. In the early 2000s, under the leadership of Alfred Tesseron, the estate began its transition to organic farming. This bold move, particularly at a time when few Bordeaux estates were pursuing such practices, was driven by a deep respect for the land and a desire to produce wines that truly express their terroir. The estate’s 81 hectares of vineyards are planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.
Established in the early 18th century by Jean-François de Pontet, the royal governor of the Médoc, the estate quickly gained prominence through the acquisition of prime vineyard land. The name "Canet" was later appended to honor the nearby village, further entrenching the estate within the fabric of its region. The estate's reverence for its land led to a pioneering shift toward organic farming, a commitment that soon evolved into a full embrace of biodynamic practices. By 2010, Château Pontet-Canet became the first Grand Cru Classé in Médoc to achieve both organic and biodynamic certification. This approach, which favors natural preparations, lunar rhythms, and a holistic understanding of the vineyard as a living, breathing ecosystem, has yielded wines that are not only true to their origins but also remarkably vibrant and expressive.
Integral to this sustainable philosophy are the estate's horses, which are employed to plow the fields, minimizing soil compaction and fostering healthier, more dynamic vines. These noble animals are more than just workers; they symbolize the estate's dedication to nurturing the land with the utmost respect and care.

The Tesseron family’s influence extends far beyond Château Pontet-Canet. Their passion for excellence is also evident in their other brands, Tesseron Cognac and Pym-Rae.
Tesseron Cognac is produced in the heart of Cognac and is renowned for its elegance, complexity, and extraordinary aging potential. The Tesseron family’s approach to cognac mirrors their philosophy at Pontet-Canet: a dedication to tradition, a respect for the environment, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence.
Pym-Rae, located in the Mount Veeder AVA of Napa Valley, was acquired by Alfred Tesseron in 2016. The winery, named after the children of the late actor Robin Williams, who previously owned the estate, reflects the Tesseron family’s commitment to producing wines of the highest quality. The wines of Pym-Rae, like those of Pontet-Canet, are crafted with a deep respect for the land and a focus on organic and biodynamic practices.
